A 3-shot injection molded lens is a high-precision optical component manufactured by sequentially injecting three different materials or colors into a single mold, allowing for complex geometries, integrated structures, or varied material properties in one step. This method improves quality, reduces assembly time, and enables specialized designs like multi-part lenses or optics with integrated gaskets/housings.

Key Aspects of 3-Shot Injection Molding for Lenses:

  • Process: A multi-step process where a lens core is molded first, followed by second and third injections that add, encapsulate, or join additional materials, reducing the need for assembly and reducing shrinkage.

  • Benefits: Increased production efficiency, lower assembly costs, and superior design capability compared to single-shot molding.

  • Applications: Ideal for complex optical components, such as creating specialized lenses with integrated mounting features or multi-part lens systems.

  • Material Utilization: Allows for combining different plastics (like PC or PMMA) in a single part to balance optical performance with structural integrity.

Common Uses:

  • Optical Components: High-precision lens assemblies, where Multi-shot techniques reduce shrinkage and deformation compared to single shots.

  • Medical/Eyewear: Specialized injection-molded components that require multiple materials or complex shapes.

This molding technique is generally more cost-effective for large-volume production of complex or multi-material parts, offering higher precision and better reproducibility
