A tail lamp retrofit upgrade older incandescents tailights to modern LED technology, offering increased visibility, faster brake activation, and improved styling.

These kits often feature plug-and-play installation for OEM assemblies or drop-in bulb replacements, commonly featuring red LEDs and sometimes integrated, customizable animation controllers for brakes and turn signals.

Common Retrofit Types & Description:

  • Drop-in LED Bulbs: Self-contained, screw-in LEDs that directly replace old bulbs, providing an easy, reversible upgrade.

  • Plug-and-Play Assemblies: Complete tail light housings

  •  designed to replace factory units directly, often with modern, aggressive styling.

  • Custom DIY Kits: Involves building custom LED arrays, using soldering tools, resistors, and sometimes new, custom-cut acrylic lenses to completely customize light patterns.

  • Wiring Harness Conversion: Involves upgrading to European-style lights on US models, requiring specialized harnesses to handle different wiring, such as amber turn signals, through c-pillar connections.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Improved Safety: Increased brightness and faster, instant-on response times for brake lights.

  • Longevity: LEDs last roughly 25,000 hours compared to ~1,200 hours for incandescent bulbs.

  • Energy Efficiency: Lower power consumption reduces strain on the vehicle's electrical system.

  • Customization: Modern controllers (e.g., BlueGhozt) can be added to customize tail light behavior, turn signals, and show modes.

Installation Tips:

  • Ensure Proper Sealing: When running new wires, ensure grommets are sealed to prevent trunk water leaks.

  • Resistors: If replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs, you may need to add resistors to prevent "hyperblinking" (rapid turn signal clicking).

  • Test Before Final Assembly: Always test brake, turn signal, and reverse lights before completely bolting the assembly in place
